The Allstars of Rock
Armored Shades of Light CD review by WOLFMAN Scott

Core Effect has shared the stage with the likes of Seether, Days of the
New, and Filter. Their music is a staple on many of the Detroit radio
stations and the band has a huge following in and around the Rock
City. Now, with the release of their second album, Core Effect is ready
to take it to the next level.

Led by the compelling vocals of Randy Riddle and dynamite guitar
work of John Keffalo and Joe Keough, the band has come up with a
sound that is familiar yet very much their own. Combining electrifying
melodies with great harmonies the band will then spin you on your ear
and hammer you with some very heavy chops from both sides with
their duel guitar attack. It is a hard sound to define but I would have
to call it a melodic grunge with a progressive attitude. Whatever you
call it, the music is a terrific blend that will have you singing along
with the hooky choruses and pumping the fist with their heavy metal
approach. If Black Sabbath decided to play Nirvana style of music, this
is what you would get. To prove my point, Core Effect even includes a
cover of "Paranoid" on this disc that is really amazing in a new sort of
way.

While they may not be the heaviest or the most crunching band you
ever heard, they have real appeal. Soon they will be a staple
wherever you are. I can remember back when the band Uriah Heep
got the moniker "The heavy metal Beach Boys" because of their
harmonies. Well, I guess we now have the "New metal Beach Boys".

Listening to this disc, it's impossible to avoid getting sucked into the
terrific melodies and sing-a-long hooks. "I Did It All" is a song that
permeates the grey matter and just keeps circling around and around
in there! I have this one permanently embedded in my musical
memory slot! The title track "Armored Shades of Light" follows a close
second. Songs like these are common place on this disc. Each and
every one is a distinct pleasure. Sometimes you don't want something
so heavy but still want that great guitar sound. When this type of
mood strikes you, this is a must have album!!
Formed in the spring of 2004, Core Effect is a Detroit based regional band whose music has
been described as heavy, modern, "hook" driven rock with an experimental edge. The band
has been compared to the likes of Breaking Benjamin, Seether, and Three Days Grace yet
has carved out their own very distinct sound.

Core Effect has played shows through out the midwest and east coast. The band has
performed concerts at some of Michigan’s finest venues including, The Fillmore Detroit,
Clutch Cargos, Saint Andrews, and The Machine Shop and has also sold out local venues,
including the Detroit staple, The Magic Bag. They have shared the stage with many national
recording artists including Saliva, Seether, Saving Abel, Thousand Foot Krutch, Filter, and
Tantric.

2009 promises to be a breakout year for Core Effect. In accordance to the elevating success
of their recent release “Armored Shades of Light,” the band will be kicking off their national
mainstream and college radio campaign with world renowned music promoter Howard
Rosen. “I Did it All” the band’s first single dropped in January. Keep your ears tuned in and
your rock fists up, Core Effect’s “Armored Shades of Light” is ready to explode!
